Closing Exercise

Take your hero out for the day!

First, read Esme Partridge’s poem, ‘I Took God with me Camping’

Now think of a place about which you are an absolute expert.

Now choose one of the North East Heroes and imagine taking them out to this place for a day. Explain all the details to them, the things you like and dislike.

Knowing what you do about the Heroes, what details would they especially like or dislike?

Begin your poem like Esme Partridge does, e.g.

‘I took Grace Darling to the Odeon…’
‘I took Josephine Butler to school…’
‘I took Humphry Davy to the skatepark…’
‘I took William Smith to the beach…’

Would Humphry Davy start inventing an improved skateboard at the park? Would he be worrying about safety measures? How would Grace Darling react to the crowds? Would Josephine Butler be happy with our modern education system? Would William Smith be trying to build a boat and sail off to sea? Would you have to tell any of the heroes off, or reassure them about anything?

Keep the poem in your voice throughout, so the hero’s reactions are implied through your own ‘I’ and ‘me’ voice.
